this illustration
depicts a scene in chapter 8 of Old
Mortality where Henry Morton is arrested on suspicion
of concealing Balfour of Burley. Portrayed, from left to right,
are the Laird of Milnwood; his housekeeper Alison Wilson; a maid;
Cuddie Headrigg; Mause Headrigg, Henry Morton, Sergeant Bothwell.
