Frontispiece and Title-Page to Tales of
a Grandfather,
Second Series, vol. III, engraved by William
Home Lizars (1829)
From: Sir Walter Scott, Tales of a Grandfather.
Second Series. Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1829.
The frontispiece is engraved after a portrait
of Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun
(1655-1716) by William Aikman. Fletcher's implacable opposition
to the Union of the Parliaments of England and Scotland is discussed
in ch. 7-8 of Tales
of a Grandfather, Second Series, vol. III. The title-page
vignette, engraved after Lizars's own design, depicts the pavilion
in the gardens belonging to the Earl of Murray's Hotel in the
Canongate, Edinburgh, which was used as a secret meeting-place
by those in favour of the Union.
