Green Mantle, engraved by James
Thomson after E.T. Parris (1833)
From: Portraits of the Principal Female Characters
in the Waverley Novels. London: Charles Tilt, 1834.
The portrait shows Lilias Redgauntlet
(or 'Green Mantle'), warning Darsie Latimer that he is in danger
of being kidnapped (Redgauntlet, Letter 12). It illustrates the
following line:
'When she entered (wonder if thou will) she wore
a green mantle such as thou hast described as the garb of thy
fair client. There was an alteration on her brow the instant
she recognized me.'
Unbeknown to both, Darsie and Lilias are brother
and sister. |
