The vignette depicts Old Mortality being greeted by Peter Pattieson as he repairs inscriptions on the the tombs of Convenanters (Old Mortality, ch. 1). It illustrates the text: 'He considered himself as fulfilling a sacred duty, while renewing to the eyes of posterity the decaying emblems of the zeal and sufferings of their forefathers.'
