Title-page for the 'Magnum
Opus' edition of The
Talisman,
engraved by Samuel Sangster after a design by Sir
John Watson Gordon (1832)
The vignette illustrates the line 'Christian
and Saracen [next] sat down together on the turf, and
produced each the small allowance of store which they carried
for
their own refreshment' (The Talisman, ch. 2). It portrays the Scottish
crusader Sir Kenneth, or the Knight of the Leopard, and Saladin,
the disguised leader of the Saracen forces. |
