John William Rattray (fl. 1842-87)
Little is known of the Edinburgh artist John William Rattray.
He painted portraits, in oil and crayon, of members of the gentry
and professional classes of Edinburgh. Most of his sitters are
unidentified, and few examples of his work are known. Peter J.M.
McEwan speculates that most of his work remains in the families
for whom it was painted.
His one known Scott-related work is a copy of Sir Henry Raeburn's
1823 portrait in Edinburgh University Library's Corson
Collection.
