Sir Walter Scott, engraved by Samuel Freeman after Sir John Watson Gordon

From: Robert Chambers, Lives of Illustrious and Distinguished Scotsmen, 4 vols (Glasgow: Blackie & Son, 1832-35), IV (1835) (front.)

Freeman's engraving was made from a signed replica of Sir John Watson Gordon's unfinished portrait of Sir Walter Scott. The replica was probably commissioned by Blackie & Son specifically so that it might be engraved. Scott's clothes are adumbrated in grey in the original portrait, but in the replica his coat is dark, waistcoat yellowish, and neckcloth black.
