Fry's engraving, which derives from Raeburn's
1808 portrait of Scott, was first published by Archibald Constable,
Edinburgh, 1821. Raeburn's painting is reduced to a waist-length
portrait with a conventional backdrop. The above print is the
frontispiece to vol. I of the The
Poetical Works of Sir Walter Scott, Bart. (Constable,
1822).
