Scores for Musical Adaptations of Scott's Work

The following is a list of recently published scores for operas and other musical works adapted or derived from the works of Sir Walter Scott.

Sullivan, Sir Arthur. Kenilworth: A Masque of the Days of Queen Elizabeth, libretto by Henry F. Chorley, ed. Robin Gordon-Powell (London: The Amber Ring 2002) 238 p. ISMN: M-708031-18-5

This is the first ever publication of the full score of Sullivan's masque for 4 Soloists (Soprano, Contralto, Tenor and Bass), choir and full orchestra. First performed at the Birmingham Music Festival in 1864, this work takes the form of one of the lavish entertainments performed for Queen Elizabeth I during her visit to Kenilworth Castle in 1575, as described in Scott's novel Kenilworth. It is published in cloth-bound hardback covers and contains introductory notes.

Sullivan, Sir Arthur. Marmion: Overture on the Epic Poem by Sir Walter Scott, full score reconstructed and edited by Robin Gordon-Powell (London: The Amber Ring 2003) 139 p. ISMN: M-708031-20-8

This is the first ever publication of a piece commissioned by the Philharmonic Society, London, and first performed by them in 1867. The autograph of the score being lost, this edition is reconstructed from the only known set of original orchestral parts. The overture offers a suggestion of the mood of Scott's poem Marmion rather than a graphic descripton of its events. The first modern performances, from this new edition, were in Glasgow (May 2004) and Edinburgh (June 2004). It is published in cloth-bound hardback covers and contains introductory notes.
